For better or worse, the newest Ranked Mode overhaul is now live in Hearthstone. Within the announcement for The Year of the Phoenix rotation, the finer details were inadvertently buried thanks to the several other changes and new features coming to the game. Upon closer inspection, the changes to ranked play offer nothing positive to the majority of players, and will arguably be a net negative change.
At its core, the new Ranked Mode is basically the same as before, with a few notable exceptions. Ranks have been replaced with Leagues, each having their own ranks from and progressing players upwards through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, before finally Legend. Rank floors also remain in each League at Ranks 5 and The biggest change lies in how each Season will reset.
This will do away with being a mere four ranks from the previous month, and now places all players at the bottom. From the launch of Hearthstone in until February , Blizzard would reset every player to between ranks 16 and 20 each Season depending on their previous rank, which always resulted in a slow, tedious grind back up the ladder and a terrible experience for players who were naturally ranked at low levels.
The first few days or week of every month, a full quarter of the season, would be filled with players of higher skill level and often more complete collections demolishing their opponents as they climbed back up in rank. In February of , Blizzard changed to only drop players four ranks below their highest standing, which is now gone. This means that players who finished at rank 5, known as Dad Legend or Casual Legend, among other names, would be placed at rank 9 at the start of a new season.
This was a great change that allowed casual players of similar skill to remain among each other each month even if they did not the time to grind out an excessive number of games, and reaching their previous rank each new season did not take much time. The Ranked Mode rework reverts this back to its pre structure, as all players will be placed into the lowest rank of Bronze

Breaking news: Hearthstone: Descent of Dragons guide. The Hearthstone dev team have been working hard on their new system for ranked play. Hearthstone has had pretty much the same ranked system for years. You start at rank 25, and gain stars with each win until you get to rank 1, and the best among us hit Legend above that.
Hearthstone’s New Rank Mode Is Terrible For Casual Players through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, before finally Legend. playing with a Star Bonus you’ll be matched by your matchmaking rating (MMR).
To support this, I am writing a detailed description which can be seen below. The full series of Hearthstone tutorials can also be found here. Consider what is going on behind the scenes of Hearthstone and how that logic would work on the back-end. Think about how each sequence of events are fired whenever a decision is made through the front-end, and how this impacts the back-end. In order to produce a turn-based card game such as this successfully, a well-made and highly capable back-end is most certainly needed.
A modular back-end, made from many comprehensive components which work together to bring any idea to life within a short space of time to accommodate for prototyping. To create the Hearthstone demonstration, I started by adding functionality to existing GameSparks components, preparing them to work in a way fit for the Hearthstone example. The most basic building block of any game and any back-end is the player. The player had to be initialised in a way that suited the game, to do that I had to give the player a rank, starting at the lowest rank which is rank 25 with 0 stars.
I also had to give the player a deck of cards.
Matchmaking should have legendary limits (casual play, not ranked)
And what else does Ashes of Outland have in store for fans of the long-celebrated online card game? Related: Hearthstone: Ultimate Beginner’s Guide. With a tumultuous beginning to the existence of the class – with nerfs already neede d for several cards and discussion of Demon Hunter balance already coming to the fore of the new expansion – it’s interesting to see how the designers were approaching the class just days prior to its launch. Year of the Phoenix for Hearthstone is a huge deal, and it seems pretty aptly named for a game that feels like it’s trying to rework itself on a lot of different levels.
How long was this big sweeping set of changes in the works before it was announced?

Every four months, Blizzard will heat up the Hearthstone world with a whole new expansion. This time, in addition to Ashes of Outland, we got a bunch of updates that are quite exciting. For some background, I started playing this game around In 3 years of my Hearthstone career, I managed to reach some milestones, one of which is to be the first Southeast Asia player who successfully finished in the 1st place Legend rank for US server.
Besides that, I am also known as the silver medalist for Asian Games and more. Source: Blizzard Entertainment.

Matchmaking how it works
Activision has warned that it may take a while for the new patch to reach everyone, due to it being launched region by region. Everything should be in place for the first wave of gamers at 1am BST, with access gradually spreading to other regions. As confirmed by Activision earlier this week, Season 9: Conquest includes some big changes for the game, including a major weapon update with the new Gunsmith feature, a new weapon class — marksman rifles, the Shipment map, a new perk, new lethal equipment, and an updated Battle Royale map.

When your star bonus multiplier is bigger than 1, or you are in Legend rank, you are generally in the first matchmaking pool; when your star bonus drops to 1, you are in the second pool. So this is not me complaining about the new ladder system, so far I have been loving it, more rewards and more clarity on when its ranked and when its MMR and I also do like to know how systems work. In the past, we never really got written explanations from Blizzard on this.
But something weird happened to me this Sunday afternoon. We all know on Sunday there are plenty of people online for the system to find an opponent. I was playing for a few hours and no matter what Tier one deck I played I ended up playing about This isnt weard, this is just the meta… but…. I started adding my opponents to see what ranks they were, and I found out multiple of them where high Legend players already.
I spoke to them and they told me they have been all legend multiple times.

If you are anything like me, the grind to Legend is just that: a grind. It takes a lot of time, effort, motivation, thought, and focus. Some people are able to breeze through the ladder with seemingly minimal effort, achieving Legend within the first couple of days. This is not the case for the vast majority of players; the grind takes at least a week or two and a significant time investment. But how much time should you factor into your considerations when you are planning your month?

Matchmaking is the process of determining appropriate player pairings when players are queuing up to play Hearthstone. The matchmaking process functions differently for each game mode. In each case, the goal is the same: to try to find a player of similar matchmaking value rating, rank or record as possible. When a player enters the matchmaking queue the system will attempt to find another player in the queue with an identical matchmaking value.
If a perfect match is not found, the matchmaking system will “wait a few seconds” and then search again. For information and statistics on specific types of matchmaking, see Ranked , Casual , and Arena. Matchmaking rating MMR is a special internal rating system used for certain types of matchmaking. MMRs are ‘hidden’ and cannot be viewed by players. MMR is adjusted after each match, depending on the outcome of the match, and the MMR of each player:.
Ranked mode MMRs are not reset at the start of every season. Casual mode MMRs do not reset. In Casual mode and the Arena, new players are initially placed into special matchmaking pools to ease them into the game. Casual mode matchmaking includes a new player pool. Players are initially placed in a separate pool, allowing them to play exclusively against other new players.
